Michael Parks Photography - Lifestyle Family Photography in St. Charles and St. Louis

I recently did my first full lifestyle family photography session with the Scheller family, and it was incredibly fun! (Okay, I have done a few with my own family, but this was the first for someone else.) What is lifestyle family photography? I’m glad you asked!

Lifestyle Family Photography—What is it?

Most people aren’t very familiar with lifestyle photography, and it doesn’t help when the name is thrown around like it is. (Mostly, I find it is used to describe photos that use a more candid type of pose.) Of course, different people have different definitions, but the word “lifestyle” literally means “the way a person lives.”

So the way I describe true lifestyle photography is photography which shows how a person actually lives. In other words, it’s not posed. It’s real people doing what they normally do.

So lifestyle family photography shows a family doing the things they love to do as a family. Before the lifestyle session took place, I talked with the Schellers about the things they love to do. (Since Lindsey and my wife are best friends, I already knew most of their favorites!)

Lifestyle Family Photography Session with the Scheller Family

With the Scheller family, that meant milk and cookies after school, having a tea party with their daughter, playing games, reading books, a surprise nerf gun attack by dad, tickle fights, soccer, baseball, and nail painting with mom and daughter!

Once I arrived at their house (just a few blocks from ours in St. Charles), I asked them what they wanted to do first. I didn’t pose them or tell them how to sit. In fact, I told them to try to pretend I wasn’t even there. (Just think of me like I’m shooting a documentary!)

First off was an after-school snack of milk and cookies in the kitchen!

Isn’t it amazing how messy kids can get from just a quick snack!

After their cookies, the Schellers moved into the family room to play and have a tea party! (The boys decided to skip the tea party for some reason.) Larry enjoyed playing FIFA with their oldest son, while Lindsey and the other kids played with their toys and games.

After playing for a bit, we moved upstairs. Lindsey is a high school English teacher, and their family loves to read together.

Of course, dads are great about inserting some action into story time!

Next, the Schellers continued story time in their daughter’s room. It’s part of their nightly routine; therefore, it was very special to capture these sweet moments!

The Schellers love being able to play outside, so we ended our afternoon together in the backyard.  Larry is a high school soccer coach, and the guys are big baseball fans. (I try to overlook the fact that they cheer for that team up north!)
